One House to Save Many
Suncorp
The world’s first home that can withstand extreme weather.
In 2020, over 134,000 Australian homes were damaged by extreme weather – and as our climate changes, this number will only rise in the future. It’s a serious issue that threatens our homes, lives and Suncorp’s bottom line as an insurer - and one we looked to solve with a unique approach. This is One House to Save Many.
For the first time ever, Australia’s leading minds in home resilience were brought together. This innovative team from the CSIRO, James Cook University and Room 11 architects combined existing research and their own expertise to build a home like no other.
A prototype was tested under extreme conditions at the JCU Cyclone Testing Station and CSIRO Bushfire Simulator. This ensured the home could not only withstand the weather of today, but also the extreme conditions that Australia will face.
The initiative was announced through a nationwide campaign and kicked off with a documentary that aired on Australia’s most watched TV network. It’s worth a watch…if you have a spare 23 minutes.
One House to Save Many is more than just a home - it’s an educational and interactive digital experience. Visitors can learn about specific features of the home – and then adopt them to build their resilience.
One House reached millions of Australians and got nationwide headlines – but it also started a conversation around our current building codes and whether they were resilient enough for our future climate.
